Siena

Siena is considered to be one of the most beautiful medieval cities in Italy. Not only does it boast a wide range of Sienese paintings in the Civic Museum, the Palazzo Pubblico with the Torre del Mangia, and the Duomo of Siena, it is also home to one of the most well-known cultural offerings in Tuscany: the famous Palio horse race that takes place twice every summer on the central Il Campo piazza.

The Sale del Mappamondo and Sale della Pace rooms of the Civic Museum house the palace of Siena’s highlights: Simone Martini’s huge ‘Maestà’ and equestrian portrait of Guidoriccio da Fogliano, along with Ambrogio Lorenzetti’s ‘Allegories of Good and Bad Government’, once considered the most important collection of secular paintings in the Middle Ages. Siena was a proud and wealthy independent state during the Middle Ages, until its final defeat by Florence, and now prospers on finance and tourism, thanks to its rich artistic heritage.
