San Galgano, Monte Siepi
Discover Italy with SRISA field trip to San Galgano and Monte Siepi
Deep in the Sienese countryside, you will find two ancient sites that are truly awe-inspiring. Firstly, the Abbey of Saint Galgano is a ruin of a Cistercian Monastery found in the province of Siena. Nowadays, only the walls of the Gothic style 13th-century Abbey church are still standing, but you can visit the Capitular Hall, Cloister, and Scriptorium.
Nearby is the Rotonda di Montesiepi (1185), the tomb of Saint Galgano and the purported site of his death in 1181. The sword is said to have been planted in the ground by Saint Galgano and here you will have the chance to visit the chapel containing frescoes by Ambrogio Lorenzetti.
