Ravenna
Discover the beautiful Mosaics of Ravenna
Ravenna is an earthly paradise for mosaic lovers, containing as it does one of the world’s most dazzling collections of early Christian mosaic artwork, spread out over several churches and baptisteries around the town - all eight were enshrined as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1996. This little-known city was also the capital city of the Western Roman Empire from 402 until that empire collapsed in 476, and had a prolonged golden age in which it became a fertile art studio for skilled craftsmen, who covered the city’s terracotta brick churches in beautiful mosaics - a sight Dante described as a 'symphony of color.'
With this in mind, students visiting Ravenna can take part in a mosaic workshop, have a tour of the city with an official guide, and visit the city’s various museums, including Dante’s tomb and the Basilica di San Vitale.
