SRISA Gallery is pleased to present Fronteras Geográficas, a solo exhibition by Mexican-American artist and Professor of Art and Printmaking at the University of Texas San Antonio, Humberto Saenz. The exhibition features works from his printmaking series Jugando a La Guerra and El Oficio. Both series examine immigration, identity, and cultural heritage through the experiences of Mexican communities in the United States.
Saenz’s Jugando a La Guerra series addresses the ongoing realities surrounding the separation of immigrant families at the United States–Mexico border, with particular attention to the experiences of the children affected by this fragmentation and who are bound by their fate. Drawing upon cultural symbolism, mythological narratives, and contemporary social concerns, Saenz explores how immigration rhetoric, legislation, and public discourse shape lives.
El Oficio incorporates references to pre-Columbian codex imagery, reinterpreted through themes of wage labor, class structure, and manual work in the United States. His figures are transformed into contemporary deities, embodying the promises and contradictions of the American Dream, highlighting the persistence, sacrifice, and endurance of working-class communities.
Through lithography and serigraphy, Fronteras Geográficas demonstrates how the democratic nature of printmaking can serve as a platform for inquiry, analysis, and dialogue surrounding contemporary social and political realities.
