Painting and drawing courses at SRISA offer students a dynamic environment for creative and conceptual growth and the opportunity to develop a technical, formal and intellectual understanding of painting and drawing while having a wealth of historically important masterpieces available to study firsthand.
Our faculty encourages students to develop a strong understanding of the relationship between historical ideas and contemporary artistic practices.
Facilities
Painting and drawing classes are held at the Santa Reparata and San Gallon studio campuses. The ample open spaces are equipped with tables, easels, and drawing boards for students to work in class including portable easels and foldable chairs for when classes go on-site. Classrooms offer natural light as well as set-ups for special lighting and still-life arrangements.
Advanced students will have a personal workspace so they may create a mini-studio area to work throughout the semester!
Materials
In most cases, SRISA does not provide art supplies or tools, but it does have a collection of art supplies available for students’ use. At the beginning of each session, students receive a full list of materials and when accompanied to the art store to purchase their materials. Students are encouraged to bring brushes if they have them.
Instruction and Structure
SRISA’s painting and drawing courses are centered on the practice of working in the studio. Professors give students one-on-one and group instruction, often accompanied by demonstrations. Studio assignments are regularly complemented by group discussions, critiques, illustrated lectures, museum and gallery visits and the analysis of historic and contemporary paintings and drawings.
To inspire and create a deeper connection to our enriched, historical environment, many courses take students out into the city and surrounding areas to paint and draw around Florence, or at one of the many world-renowned museums in the area.
