Arts Studio

The Arts Studio at Santa Reparata is where the Renaissance Drawing and Painting Techniques courses take place offering students a dynamic environment for creative and conceptual growth. The courses offer a chance to gain a technical, formal, and intellectual understanding of the painting and drawing methods and techniques developed during the Renaissance. For art historians, learning how these materials were used to create the masterpieces of Florentine painting.

Our faculty encourages students to develop a strong understanding of the relationship between historical ideas and contemporary artistic practices.

Facilities

The spacious second floor features abundant natural light and is furnished with tables, easels, and a designated workspace where students have the opportunity to create their own tools and materials, including quill and reed pens, various types of ink, glues, gesso, and tempera paint.

Materials

In most cases, SRISA does not provide art supplies or tools, but it does have a collection of art supplies available for students’ use. At the beginning of each session, students receive a full list of materials and when accompanied to the art store to purchase their materials. Students are encouraged to bring brushes if they have them.

Instruction and Structure

SRISA’s painting and drawing courses are centered on the practice of working in the studio. Professors give students one-on-one and group instruction, often accompanied by demonstrations. Studio assignments are regularly complemented by group discussions, critiques, illustrated lectures, museum and gallery visits and the analysis of historic and contemporary paintings and drawings.

To inspire and create a deeper connection to our enriched, historical environment, many courses take students out into the city and surrounding areas to paint and draw around Florence, or at one of the many world-renowned museums in the area.
