The exhibited works belong to a design process promoted by the art group SCRIPTA, an international collective of calligraphy artists. In the collective project Acqua, each artist chose to interpret the transversal nature of this theme in its many aspects, through their own individual contemporary expressive calligraphic style. The variegated marks, which characterize the works, are mostly gestural inspired by classical calligraphy and developed in individualized directions in regards to the choice of technique and expression of form. Selection of words and phrases, techniques, formats, medium and references, express the path that each artist has taken in response to this universal theme, both in its social implications and in its more intimate permutations.
For the SCRIPTA group, writing is an action in itself, not bound to the subsequent act of reading. The word is the means that guides the expression of the artist through mark-making, allowing the hidden beauty of the compositional rhythms of space and proportions to emerge. The enchantment of the moment in the act of “writing” allows the artist to experience the profound awareness of the “here and now.” The act of writing is captured in the perfect moment in which the movement of mark-making flows in unison with the breath and the beating of the heart. For SCRIPTA, illegible writing becomes writing beyond writing, an experience of unity between sign, word and body. This ineffable convergence follows the sensitive path of the soul. A spectrum of emotions incises the paper which, like a living and burning register, documents these signs from within. The act of handwriting and the moment in which a thought is expressed through the mark, thus become part of an artistic journey in which it is possible to express something profoundly creative and authentic. Something which overcomes the way in which these signs are normally read or interpreted, in a surprising universal language where technique and research, artistic inspiration and reflection, rigor and creativity merge.
