The SRISA Printmaking Department offers one of the best-equipped and most broadranging
print facilities in Italy.
Students have a full range of technical possibilities, including relief printing, etching, photomechanical processes, oil and water-based monoprinting, letterpress, bookbinding, and digital technology.
Many classes incorporate a wide variety of media and students can pursue crossover
techniques in which a number of processes are used. Students at SRISA are able to move
back and forth between letterpress, computer, printing press, and alternate process darkroom
seamlessly.
Course structure
During semesters courses meet twice a week for a total of 6 contact hours and are a mixture
of demonstrations, art history and critical theory presentations to support course-work and extensive open-studio and one-on-one work with professors.
Mid-term and final critiques are an important component of each course and students are encouraged to participate in discussions and engage with their peers. When possible classes will leave campus to
work on-site, visit exhibitions and museums and engage with the cultural landscape directly. Students have generous access to art studios outside of class and in evenings and over the weekends to work on projects. The best work made by each student is chosen after the final critique and presented at the final student show.
