Course Description:
Place based learning experiences are a path by which teachers, students and working artists can come to understand and make meaning in the world. Using the layered history of Florence, this course considers cultural traditions and contemporary art as a foundation for investigating multicultural issues in art education. As part of this course, students will have the opportunity to visit sites including Florence’s Artisan Quarter, the Uffizi, and the Loris Malaguzzi Center in Reggio Emilia. Lectures, discussions, readings, and field trips will flow into studio activities that both provide opportunities for personal practice and use of concepts and materials with youth. Our main goal in this course it is to provide you with strategies to nurture creativity and support visual expressiveness in your future classroom or personal practice.
