Course Description:
This course is a chronological study of residential housing and furnishings in Europe from the Renaissance to the 20th century, with a special emphasis on Italian history. The course provides students with a general background of the major design periods from the 16th century to the 20th century. Topics will include the design of furniture, architecture, and interiors as well as the effects of culture, geography, technology, religion, and politics on design and architecture. Particular focus is given to the most relevant Italian designers of the 20th century. Coursework will take place both in the classroom and on-site visiting some of Florence’s most interesting buildings.
SRISA studio courses will have personal and course materials to be purchased in Florence. A complete list will be provided with the syllabus on the first day of class.
