Course Description:
Art in Context: Exploring Art Through Creative Practice and History invites students to discover art across cultures through a combination of studio practice and historical exploration. This course integrates hands-on projects with art historical study, allowing students to engage with art not just as observers, but as active participants in the creative process.
Through field trips, discussions, and studio-based projects, students will explore how artists have historically responded to cultural and social contexts. While Florence—renowned for its Renaissance legacy—serves as a key reference point, the course also considers global artistic movements and art history.
By blending historical perspectives with hands-on studio practice, students will develop a deeper understanding of artistic process, materials, and conceptual frameworks. Whether sketching in museums, experimenting with different media, or reflecting on past influences in contemporary practice, students will utilize the past and the creative possibilities of the present.
