This course analyzes the strategies and the design techniques behind the process of apparel product development used in the fashion industry. The professor will introduce students to the activities involved in apparel construction and will emphasize both technical and creative methods. This is a practical and theoretical course: the purpose is to form and train students in designing a ‘line’ or collection.
The starting point will be to identify the right target market and to create products that will appeal to that marketplace. They will then select materials and components required for the item’s production and will finally develop the product’s technical specifications. Following this first step, students will then dedicate their time to the garment’s construction, including: study of advanced sewing techniques appropriate for any type of fabric and design, pattern development, draping, cutting and fitting techniques. At the end of the semester, students will have designed and produced a portfolio of their works as well as a capsule collection, which they will present during a final exhibition/fashion show.
